Vier Mann, vier Instrumente, dazu Gesang. Mehr braucht das aus Winterthur stammende Quartett Viatikum nicht, um seine Version des Stonerrocks zu spielen. Und diese Version spielt nicht nur genretypisch mit schweren Riffs und zähen Grooves, sie deutet auch Strukturen des New Artrock an. So ist dann das Debut "Trip Me Tender" durchaus ein Spiel zwischen Laut und Leise oder Schneel und Langsam, und doch sind es die wuchtigen Drums, die heftig knarrenden und psychedelisch jaulenden Gitarren, die den sechs Tracks ihren Stempel aufdrücken. Dazu gesellt sich der Gesang, der schon an so manchen Heavy-Metal-Shouter erinnert. Das Timbre der Stimme und dieser Hauch von Verzweiflung stehen den Vocals eines David Judson Clemmons in nichts nach. Ruhige, fast schon elegante Momente kommen den Schweizer Landmännern von Beautiful Leopard nahe. Die Kombination der beiden Gitarren birgt manchen schönen Moment. Eine etwas bessere - sprich: fettere und dynamischere - Produktion hätte dieses Album verdient. Aber das kann ja noch werden. (7/10 Punkte, Bernd Sievers)

Warm psychedelic vibes from Winterthur, Switzerland. The band describes their music as 'Kosmickrock'. Viaticum creates a good balance between trippy instrumentals & intensive vocals, although it can be quite confusing where these guys want to take their overall sound (when the second track kicks in for example). A loose but interesting mix of space, psychedelic, kraut, prog, & psychedelic rock!

Sure to be a future favourite with the underground blogosphere, Viaticum's debut is the classic case of a potentially heavy band, working inside the idiom confines of indie-rock. With psych-rock at its core, the band's slow, glorious sprawl, combines dark and melodic grandeur with Ride-style shoegazing and avant-garde metal, with stunning and bludgeoning results. Like Isis before them, the key to Viaticum's heaviness is their ability to woven thick, distorted layers into a compact tapestry; as the bass and drums remain submerged under a blanket of choppy riffs and airy vocals. Dynamic and profound, Trip Me Tender is a polished and mature release, by a band with plenty of potential.
